Cargo records compiled by toll collectors on Illinois and Michigan Canal refer to "arrived" articles as items already abroad the vessel when it entered the waterway and "cleared" items which were abroad boats that were ready to be unloaded at their departure point. Approximately 125 categories of agricultual products, raw materials, and manufactured goods (e.g., foodstuffs; grain; building supplies; agricultural implements) were listed by weight or other measurement. Records are held for the following offices : Chicago (1852, 1855-1871); Copperas Creek (1895-1899); Ottawa (1852-1866, 1872-1897); Lockport (1857-1901); Bidgeport (1859-1862); Henry (1872-1879); and La Salle (1865-1877).
